Internet safety for young children means being careful and mindful when using the internet.
Since Gen Zs are accustomed to technology and the internet, ways to keep them safe and secure should always be discussed in school and at home.
Here are a few key concepts that can be explained to a young child:

Keep personal information private: Explain to them that some information, like their full name, address, or phone number, should not be shared with anyone they meet online. This information once shared can be used against them and should not be used to create a password. When creating a password, it is advisable to use a mixture of capital letters, small letters, numbers and figures.

2. Be careful when clicking on links or downloading attachments: Tell them to only click on links or download attachments from trusted sources. Clicking on links from untrusted sources will make it easier for scammers to hack into your account.

3. Only talk to people they know: Encourage them to only communicate online with friends and family they know in real life.
The internet is a place for the good and the bad guys. The keypads hide the true identity of the people we meet online. If the need arises to talk to people they don't know online, let it be done with the awareness of an adult and ensure they don't go to their houses or meet in private places.

4. Report anything that makes them feel uncomfortable: Teach them that if they come across anything online that makes them feel scared, upset, or uncomfortable, they should tell a trusted adult right away.

5. Use the internet safely and responsibly: Emphasize that the internet can be a fun and educational tool, but it's important to always use it in a safe and responsible way. Make them understand that their actions online have consequences that they are seen by everyone and can't be undone.

6. Attend Digital Citizenship Classes: Digital citizenship classes are lessons curated on the responsible ways of using technology and the internet for good. Participating in these classes will enlighten them on the safe practices for becoming good digital citizens.
At Topflighters Online School, Digital Citizenship Education is embedded in our lessons and can be offered as a stand-alone subject.
